Ramadan Mubarak vs Ramadan Kareem: What to Write in a Card
·5 min read
Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem? How the greetings differ, plus short card messages and duas for the start of the month.

The first night of Ramadan arrives quietly for some houses and all at once for others. A Ramadan card is not an Eid card. It is a wish for the month itself: mercy, ease in the fast, and a heart that stays awake.
People freeze on the greeting. Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem? Both are correct. Use the one you actually say.
What the two greetings mean
Ramadan Mubarak means blessed Ramadan. It is the greeting most English speakers already know. Ramadan Kareem means a generous Ramadan, a wish that the month gives more than it asks. Neither is more pious. Neither will offend if the rest of the note is sincere.
If the card already says one on the front, you do not have to repeat it. Write the other, or skip the greeting and go straight to a dua.
Messages for the start of the month
“Ramadan Mubarak. May Allah make the fasts light and the nights full of accepted duas.”
“Ramadan Kareem. Praying this month brings you closer to ease, and that you are remembered in someone's qiyam.”
“Thinking of you as the month begins. May your table be full and your heart at rest.”
“May Allah grant you strength in the days and peace in the nights. Ramadan Mubarak.”
When to send it
A Ramadan card arrives best in the first week, or a few days before if you are posting overseas. Late in the month it can still be kind. Write “in these last ten nights” and keep it short. Save Eid Mubarak for Eid.
If you are sending a card to someone who is unwell or exempt from fasting, do not centre the hunger. Wish them a month of mercy and rest.
What to avoid
Do not turn the card into a timetable of how they should worship. Do not joke about how hard fasting is if you do not know their health. A Ramadan card is a kind note, not a list of how they should pray.
Shop Ramadan Mubarak cards when you want something they can prop on a shelf for the whole month, or browse every occasion if you also need an Eid card to send later.
